Brownfield Bog: "During the summer, when the nearby Saco
River is overrun with canoeists, you can paddle undisturbed on
Brownfield Bog. The Brownfield Bog Wildlife Management Area,
maintained by the state, contains hundreds of acres of bog to
explore. When we paddled here on a warm, sunny October day, the big
tooth aspen leaves reflected golden light onto the water, along with
a beautiful view of the snow-dusted White Mountains off in the
distance. An extensive grassy area at the end of the road would make
a scenic area for a picnic. Brownfield Bog, very wild but relatively
accessible, teems with wildlife. In addition to nesting waterfowl,
you can expect to see deer, beaver, muskrat, turtles, and—if you
paddle here early in the morning or at dusk—an occasional moose.
Just about every type of bog vegetation is present as well, from
pitcher plants and sundews to water lilies, sweet gale, and rhodora.
Because of the huge amount of beaver activity and the extensive bog
vegetation, we progressed slowly through the hidden pathways. If you
need more space, just push aside the small floating islands dotting
the bog. Because there is as much land as water surface area, you
can paddle in the bog unaffected by wind. Brownfield Bog typifies
the kind of wilderness experience that becomes increasingly
difficult to find in Maine these days. It seems that even the most
remote ponds and lakes sprout cabins and camps overnight, and
unfortunately more and more people adopt the sedentary TV-generation
lifestyle by forsaking the tradition al hand-powered Maine canoe for
motorboats. Because the bog is owned by the state, it will not
sprout cabins; and because it is so shallow and weedy, those
addicted to throbbing horsepower will have to get their thrills
elsewhere. Gazing off through fall-colored, yellow-leaved birches
and aspen at the layered hillsides and mountains, we are thankful
that Brownfield Bog remains wild and protected in such a heavily
vacationed area." Source: Appalachian Mountain Club

Finding Peace
through The Work of Byron Katie, True North, Falmouth, Maine
2008 Classes at True North:

Thurs, June 12, 6-8pm,
Thursday, Sept 25, 6-8pm,
Wed, Oct 22, 6-8pm,
Saturday, Nov 15, 9-noon
Thursday, Dec 4, 6-8pm
The Work is a simple yet powerful process of inquiry that teaches
you to identify and question the stressful thoughts that cause all
the suffering in the world. It's a way to understand what's hurting
you, a way to end all your stress and suffering.
"My husband doesn't listen."
"My boss doesn't respect me."
"My body is failing me."
Thoughts such as these enter our minds many times throughout the
day, causing us to experience fear, anger, stress, sadness, anxiety,
and depression. The Work of Byron Katie offers us a way out.
The Work has been called self-help, but it is far more than that: it
is self-realization, and it leads to the end of suffering.
If you are tired of suffering, desire a life of happiness and total
freedom, and really want to know the truth, this workshop is for
you. Whether you are having trouble with relationships, your health,
finances, or just feel sad and depressed, using The Work to question
the underlying beliefs that keep you locked in a negative-feeling
place will give you the opportunity to clear your mind, discover
what is true for you, and experience a joy for life that might have
seemed impossible before.
In this insightful and life-changing workshop, Jen will teach you
how to use four questions and a turnaround to investigate your
stressful thoughts. After this workshop, you’ll have the ability to
use The Work to examine any thought that would keep you from living
in total peace and freedom.
"We can only be afraid of what we believe we are - whatever there is
in ourselves that we haven't met with understanding." - Byron Katie
Come and discover yourself in a whole new way. Learn how to use The
Work to meet your thoughts with understanding and watch your life
begin to change.
People who do The Work faithfully
report life-changing results.
- Eliminate stress: Live without
anxiety or fear
- Improve relationships: Have a new sense of connection
& intimacy
with your husband, wife, partner, your parents, your children, and with
yourself
- Reduce anger: Get angry less often
and less intensely, and eventually not at all
- Eliminate depression: See
perfection in situations that were once debilitating
- Clarity: Act more intelligently
and effectively
- Energy: Experience a new sense of
vigor and well-being
- Peace: Learn how to love what is,
and find lasting inner peace
Come experience The Work of Byron Katie by a trained practitioner
of The Work who is passionate about the possibility of peace and
therefore the end of violence in our world.
Come experience the power of inquiry.
This workshop is led by Jen Deraspe, a member of True North
community faculty.
Jen is both a graduate and 3-time staff of Byron Katie's 9 Day School for
The Work. Jen is enrolled in the Certification Program through The
Institute for The Work, a 4 year immersion where candidates are
asked to work fearlessly on themselves, in support of teaching
each candidate how to end suffering through embodying inquiry in
their own lives. Jen's heart's desire is to help others find peace
as she continues to deepen her own practice of The Work.
Fee for evening classes: $25 each Saturday
workshop: $40 each
