A recent testimonial from a custom retreater
May 7, 2008
Dearest
Jen,
I am so happy for you and the path you are on! You are a bright light and
sharing your unique wisdom is a gift to those who cross paths with you.
Please never question your thread in the tapestry of the Universe.
Do you remember the day I came to your sacred space and you opened my heart
and mind? I do. I believe it was May 15, 2006. Prior to that experience, it
was easier for me to not take responsibility for my own life, fulfilling my
own destiny to be a Mom.
Well, now I look into my daughter’s eyes and remember that day vividly and I
thank you for taking the veil off my eyes.
It would have been easy to step off the path of adoption, giving in to fear,
financial issues, lifestyle change, whatever. But there are two events in
my life that changed everything and one was the meditative experience with
you. That awakening always brought me back to the essence of my soul and
the knowledge that if I didn’t continue and adopt, I would regret it for the
rest of my days on earth.
Julia is 20 days old today and the journey of her light finding us is a
miracle...

What is The
Work?
The Work is a simple yet powerful process of inquiry
that teaches you to identify and question the stressful thoughts that
cause all the suffering in the world. It's a way to understand what's hurting
you, a way to end all your stress and suffering.
People who do The Work faithfully report life-changing
results.
- Eliminate stress: Live without anxiety or fear
- Improve relationships: Have a new sense of
connection and intimacy with your husband or wife, your parents, your
children, and with yourself
- Reduce anger: Get angry less often and less
intensely, and eventually not at all
- Eliminate depression: See perfection in
situations that were once debilitating
- Clarity: Act more intelligently and effectively
- Energy: Experience a new sense of vigor and
well-being
- Peace: Learn how to love what is, and find
lasting inner peace
The Work is called self-help, but it is far more than
that: it is self-realization, and it leads to the end of suffering. As we
investigate a stressful thought, we see for ourselves that it's untrue; we get
to look at the cause-and-effect of it, to observe in sobering detail exactly
what modes of pain and confusion result from believing it; then we get a glimpse
into the empty mirror, the world beyond our story of the world, & see what our
life would be like without the thought; and finally we get to experience the
opposite of what we have so firmly believed. Once we deeply question a thought,
it loses its power to cause us pain, & eventually it ceases even to arise. "I
don't let go of my thoughts," Katie says. "I meet them with understanding.
Then
they let go of me." Stephen Mitchell, A Thousand Names for Joy

To study the Way is to study the self.
To study the self is to forget the self.
To forget the self is to be enlightened by all things.
To be enlightened by all things is to remove the barriers between
one's self and others.
Then there is no trace of enlightenment, though enlightenment itself
continues into one's daily life endlessly.

Quote below is sourced from Byron Katie's free monthly newsletter available
to you at:
http://www.byronkatie.com/newsletter_january_08.html
"I write you to invite your mind to The Work,
knowing that peace can only come from your invitation to yourself. Peace and
happiness are the same, and if that is your goal, The Work works.
Are you beginning to understand that it’s not reality that changes, it’s what
you believe (not what you want to believe) that changes reality?
In-joy yourself, re-joice yourself, know yourself, happiness yourself through
inquiry.
The Work is how; inside you releases the what. When you see the what, the
enlightenment that the what shows you is all that is necessary for automatic
change to take place, and it does.
In peace, as peace, as your own dear self,
kt (also known to me as you). "
Jen is a 2006 graduate of The 9 Day School for The Work of Byron Katie and has been selected to be on
staff for Katie's 9 Day School in
June and October, 2007 and again in April, 2008. Jen is a practitioner of The
Work and is enrolled in the Certification Program to be a Licensed
Facilitator--a 2-4 year intensive where she has been invited to work fearlessly
on herself, teaching her how to end her own suffering through embodying inquiry
in her own life. Jen's heart's desire is to help others find peace and true
freedom as she continues to deepen her own practice of The Work.
As stated on Katie's website,
www.thework.com, "The School for The
Work is unlike any other
school on earth - instead of focusing on learning, students unlearn the fearful
stories we have innocently attached to. Graduates are prepared to facilitate
this transformative and simple method in unleashing stressful thoughts and
beliefs that cause internal pain and suffering. Being free doesn’t come
from learning new concepts. It is who you already are once your limiting beliefs
have been met with understanding. "
"Know yourself. It is internally radical~to experience
my True Nature as I look out and see myself." Byron Katie

And the heart says only one thing: "What is is."
As you do The Work, you return to the place you never actually moved from,
the heart, the sweet center of the universe.
Heart is just another name for the open mind.
There is nothing sweeter."

Testimonials for Jen
facilitating The Work of Byron Katie:
"Once again, I’ll say, you are a gifted coach, leader, listener, and I am
blessed for having found you via the internet weeks ago. The work and your fine
guidance continues to help me each day. A day does not go by that I don’t work
The Work." Deborah Parkman, Georgia, fall 2007 (Phone Client)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I kept getting images of what was happening to me as an individual and to
all of us as a group during that week in the Maine woods. At times it was like a
ball of yarn that was untangling itself. I thought of a quote I had heard once,
"walk towards what you fear" and I thought of the process, not unlike labor and
delivery...the painful release of old stories and gentle paddling through the
peaceful waters. I realized that we were all trying to birth ourselves that
week. Thank you both for the gift of allowing this to happen." Carolyn
Plourde (A 6 Day retreat focusing on The Work and Nature, summer 2007)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"It's amazing how
solitude surrounded by nature can revive my spirit! It was time for a break from
the hectic pace with strong desire to slow things down. The solo retreat space
was welcoming, cozy, and perfect for reflection. Jen's sharing of "The Work" has
remained with me as I realize the importance of focusing within, gaining
understanding about past judgments on others while learning to let go. The yoga
and guided meditation, followed by a solitary walk to view the sun setting below
the mountains was what I needed to sleep peacefully and awake refreshed. I shall
return to this peaceful place. My heart and soul thank you!"

Testimonial
"My experience this weekend was both a challenge
and a great blessing. There was much that re-awakened parts of myself that I
have not felt since I was a young girl...I also feel that this time has given me
the closure I was seeking around unrealized potentialities (from my past)...I
really feel like I can let that all go now.
I know more change is coming,
but what's new is now I have a stronger sense of purpose about what is emerging.
Thank you so very much for helping me as I find my way."

Jen is stellar.
She is a very excellent teacher with a good sense of humor.
I loved the class.
John C, USM, fall 2007
The instructor was amazing. She is one of the best teachers I had. She made the
class worth attending, fun and most importantly, real. She was always
straightforward
to what she wanted done and always was upfront and honest with the class. She is
so passionate about the subject that it made others (me) really want to listen
and learn. Th course really opened my eyes and made me realize so much about
myself and my body. It also made me look harder at what I was eating and how it
effects my body and
emotions. I really loved the class. It was actually worth taking. Stacie Jones, USM, fall 2007
Jen's way of teaching was very enthusiastic and entertaining. The way she
presented the information was excellent. If every course had a teacher like her
it would be
taught very well. USM, fall 2007
Jen is an enthusiastic, exciting teacher. She is very good at getting people
to listen and understand the subject matter as well as intriguing the students
enough
to get them to care about the material they are learning about.
Anon., USM, fall 2007
The instructor was very fun, open and likable. She was very easy to get to
know and her style of teaching was easy to learn from. Anon, USM,
fall 2007

didn't know about that I will be able to take away with me for the rest of my

Yoga Philosophy and Approach
The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit
root "yuj", i.e "to yoke" [to the spirit] meaning "union of the individual
soul with the universal soul . Yoga’s ultimate goal is the joining of body,
mind and spirit, in a conscious unification into Oneness. In the Western
world, the most popular form of yoga is Hatha Yoga, a form that stresses
mastery of the physical body as a gateway to attaining spiritual perfection.
Hatha Yoga, or sun / moon yoga - is defined as self-realization through
discipline in yoga. Its particular appeal for health-conscious Westerners is
that it approaches self-transformation through the physical body by means of
practicing postures while regulating the breath. Generally, Hatha yoga
classes involve close attention to the breath and moving from one pose to
another at a slower pace than Ashtanga or other power yoga styles.
When incorporated into our daily lives, even in miniscule doses, yoga offers
us multiple benefits. In our task-filled, busy days, yoga provides us a
respite to energize our bodies and calm our minds. In fact, most people
begin to see and feel improvements in their flexibility, strength and stress
levels after only a few classes.
Abandon the competitive mind-set
Yoga is absolutely non-competitive. It is not just a "work out," it is not
just "cross-training," it is a spiritual practice which makes the body
stronger, more flexible, and generally much healthier. The aim is to calm
the mind, open the heart, and accelerate our spiritual evolution.
Rest and return to balance is an important part of each yoga class. We will
offer you a space to honor and accept where you are presently at in relation
to your health and wellness, create opportunity for you to do what you can
to enhance that level, and find safe haven during that process.
Wherever or whenever we begin yoga is perfect. No experience or flexibility
is required. Our aim is help students to remember how to “inhabit” their
bodies in a mindful, conscious and gentle way. Practicing radical
self-acceptance at the same time as reaching deeply inside to raise our
capacity to live fully awakened and energized through yoga is what the
Pleasant Mountain Yoga Studio offers. Our approach is gentle and
student-centered. We accommodate to many experience and fitness levels. We
offer 2 class levels that are connected and interrelated. Feel free to try
both to see where you feel most at home. Contact by phone for specific
details about each class at 207.452.2929.
The benefits of a gentle approach to yoga may be just as profound with
consistency and intention. If you are curious about yoga, here’s an ideal
way to get started. Interested in an experience of yoga that feels fabulous
without causing undo strain? Jen will teach you how to finesse your way
safely and easily into a refined series of deep stretches. In Beginner I
class, yoga becomes satisfying and accessible as you are compassionately
guided through simple and extensive warm-up series and postures (asana)
including modifications to meet you where you are at. Whether you are new to
yoga, a longtime practitioner, or simply wanting to experience a gentle
approach, what you gain from this program can become a valuable part of a
new or lifelong practice. For deeply relaxing, opening, and rejuvenating
please try our Yoga I class. If you have physical limitations, this class
will accommodate as best as is possible.
Discover the posture or asana basics, learn breathing techniques (pranayam),
